And as always it was great to catch up with our great friend, field tester and DOXA Ambassador - Karl Shreeves.

Tiffany Leite (L) Karl Shreeves (R)

The Project AWARE SUB is our first ever co-branded SUB to directly benefit a non-profit/ charitable initiative, and the feedback from the folks in attendance was really something!

We also got to catch up with some PADI and Project AWARE folks from Europe Jack Lavanchy (President of PADI Europe) and Thomas Sobotta (Manager of Project AWARE Europe) were on hand to lend their support.

An extra-special thank-you to:

Jenny Miller Garmendia - Director - Project AWARE Foundation

Dr. Drew Richardson - President and Chief Operating Officer of PADI Worldwide

Brian P. And DOXA is extremely proud to have been a part of it.

DOXA supplied a DOXA SUB 1000T Professional and 750T professional for use by the pair, and according to Alex Hibbert – “The watches were faultless. Bob was a member of the now iconic 7-Eleven cycling squad - the FIRST US team to compete in the Tour de France. He was also an integral part of Andy Hampsten's Giro d' Italia win (the first, and so far ONLY American to conquer the Tour of Italy). He has rubbed shoulders (and handlebars) with some of the most noted names in professional cycling including Bernard Hinault, Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong.

Bobke (as he is known to many) made the transition from road cycling to professional mountain biking, and has now become perhaps one of the most visible television commentators through his participation in the Tour de France coverage team each year.

We caught up with Bob in San Francisco at Sugar Cafe, where we had some coffee and heard some fantastic stories of his days racing in Europe.

In recognition of all he has done to promote the sport of cycling in the US and around the world in both his racing career and now as a television correspondent and author of two warmly received cycling memoirs, we were very pleased to present him with a DOXA SUB 1000T Divingstar. DOXA's own "yellow jersey".

Please be sure to catch Bob's coverage of the Tour of California this month (February), and later this July as he covers the Tour de France once again.Bob Roll's two cycling collections -

BOBKE and BOBKE II are both published by Velopress

DOXA Heads to the Arctic

DOXA is proud to be the official Timekeepers
of the Tiso Trans Greenland expedition

1400 miles unsupported in the Arctic

- Pair of young men to make polar history -

Two young men are set to make polar history as part of a British team trekking fully unsupported across Arctic Greenland on a new 1,400 mile route this March.

The Tiso Trans Greenland is a major deviation from recent polar expeditions which have heavily relied on guides, established routes and support – the team will return to the roots of polar travel. The expedition will be the longest fully unsupported polar journey in history. The record is currently held by Norwegians Rune Gjeldnes and Torry Larsen who travelled 1305 miles (2100km) unsupported across the Arctic Ocean. As they reached their destination, Canada, in 2000, a doctor assessed that the pair were 48 hours from death.

The audacious pair comprises expedition leader Alex Hibbert, 21, (Portsmouth) and George Bullard 19, (Norfolk) who has recently returned from the sub-Antarctic with London based charity BSES Expeditions. Alex is a recent Oxford graduate, athlete and photographer who plans to begin commando training with the Royal Marines Young Officer Batch of 2008. At 15, he was one of the youngest people to ever complete the 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Kayak Race and climbs regularly in the Alps. George is an accomplished open water swimmer and all round endurance athlete. With his coach, Nick Adams, took on the English Channel in 2003, a swim around Manhattan in 2004 and around Barbados in 2006.

They are undertaking the route which includes un-trodden areas starting from the coast near Kulusuk without support or resupplies, and are seeking charity sponsorship to enhance their goal. They will have no kites, dogs or motorised power, and the pair have to drag sledges weighing more than 330 lbs each in temperatures ranging from minus 30 degrees Celsius. Travelling for over three months from late March, the team will endure the tough Spring conditions including darkness and heavy storms.

Unlike the majority of polar expeditions which are limited by when air support can afford to perform a pickup, the Tiso Trans Greenland will be limited less artificially. The team has finite supplies of food and fuel - their challenge will be to reach the east coast before either run out.

Raising awareness for cancer is key to the expedition, particularly in partnership with the Breast Cancer Haven. This is in addition to the substantial funds that have already been raised for past charities, Cancer Research UK and Maggie’s Cancer Centres. Alex’s previous projects have raised £20,000 to date for charity and the team are keen to surpass this total by raising the project’s profile and engaging the public.

www.tisogreenland.com

http://www.alexhibbert.com/

DOXA Rewards the PADI Pros!

DOXA Rewards the PADI Pros

For many divers both recreational and professional, the orange DOXA SUB is synonymous with professional grade equipment. PADI and DOXA are teaming up to recognize the hardest working professionals in diving – PADI Instructors.
The 2008 Go PRO Challenge Professional Rating Contest recognizes PADI Professionals for completing professional-level courses and certifying divers. The first prize for the Professional Rating Contest is the DOXA SUB 5000T Professional, and will be awarded to the winner in each of PADI’s five Regions: PADI International Limited (UK)/Nordic, PADI Asia Pacific, PADI Europe, PADI Americas / Canada and PADI Japan.

Rick Marei (Marketing Manager of DOXA Watches LTD) had this to say: “To me, PADI stands for diving! It’s rewarding for all of us at DOXA to participate with the PADI Offices to recognize the ongoing commitment of PADI Professionals around the world. Since 1967, the DOXA SUB has been standard equipment for professional divers around the world. Back in the seventies, some of the world’s most accomplished divers relied on a DOXA SUB, the worlds’ only dive watch equipped with the patented non decompression bezel. World-famous divers like Philippe Cousteau, rely on a DOXA SUB to back up their dive computer. It’s only fitting that today’s top dive professionals who work tirelessly to promote diving and diver education globally also have DOXA’s flagship (the SUB 5000T) to rely on, too!”

DOXA says THANK YOU PADI!

DOXA is perhaps one of the most influential watch companies in terms of helping to make diving more accessible to the general public. The original DOXA SUB 300 was designed and engineered with the goal of not merely producing a dive watch, but rather an indispensable piece of dive equipment. The DOXA SUB 300 was not only the world's first orange faced diving watch, but it was also the first dive watch equipped with The US Navy's no-decompression dive table limits incorporated into the bezel! DOXA also produced the first dive watch equipped with a Helium Release Valve (The Conquistador) available to the general public.

Just as DOXA has developed cutting edge watches to aid divers everywhere, PADI (The Professional Association of Diving Instructors) has perhaps done more than any other organization to promote diving as a participation sport. Through education, development and continuing promotion of the sport, it is safe to say that when people think diving, they think PADI!

In recognition of all that PADI has done to promote diving in the US and around the world, DOXA was pleased and honored to visit the PADI Worldwide main office in Southern California on October 16th, and present two of their key officers with the DOXA 1000T
Professional. Sano

Rex is a senior editor of the leading US watch magazine "hr: watches"
Read the complete article in their Basel issue, available at the newsstand on March 15th

How many of you out there have heard of DOXA? If you are an avid reader of hr: Watches, a collector of fine timepieces or love exploring the depths of the sea; you know DOXA. For those of you that don’t, please let me indulge you. DOXA was founded in 1889 in the heart of one of Switzerland’s major and most innovative watch manufacturing areas, Neuchâtel’s Jura Mountains, by Georges Ducommun. He was one of 13 children of a poor family, and at the age of 12, he became an apprentice in a manufacture that specialized in casing-up watch movements. Eight years later, young Georges started his own watch repair business which lead to his own successful watch manufacturing business one year later.

Jump to 2006. One of Switzerland’s best kept secrets consists of five major collections: the SUB750T Professional, SUB600 T-GRAPH, DOXA DECO, Flieger II, and 8-Days DOXA. It is intended to increase aware-ness for their ticking treasures. This tendency, where the firm places high-end timepieces on stars’ wrists in Hollywood movies, is an interest-ing yet somehow superficial practice aimed at getting the companies a great deal of attention. But at least one cooperative positioning recently took place in Hollywood that was actually very authentic, making a whole lot of sense for its brand and the motion picture in question alike: Doxa and Dirk Pitt. Clive Cussler is the success-ful author of the Dirk Pitt series of novels that feature a James Bond-type NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) agent by the name of Dirk Pitt and his sidekick, Al Giordino. And the high-powered film version of his 1992 adventure “Sahara” hit the big screen in the spring of 2005 with main character Dirk Pitt wearing an “orange face Doxa dive watch.”While the horologically uniniti-ated have probably wondered if the watch found on the pages of Cussler’s novels is real or not, International Watch readers know the authenticity of the brand. But what about Pitt’s use of Doxa use in the books?

Click here to read full article >

Raising the DOXA SUB

"read what America's leading watch magazine says about DOXA"

Raising the DOXA SUB:

In the early 1980s, the DOXA SUB, the world’s first orange-dial dive watch, disappeared and was not produced for 20 years. Now it has resurfaced with a splash.

The DOXA SUB dive watch, it must besaid, deserved a better fate. It debuted in 1967 and boasted a number of historical firsts: the first Swiss commercial divers’ watch, first divers’ watch with an orange dial, firstwatch with a no-decompression dive table bezel, and the first, in 1969, with a helium re-lease valve. But, impressive as the DOXA SUB 300T was, fate dealt it a cruel blow. It had the misfortune to be a thick, oversized mechanical born just as history was ushering in a new era of sleek, elec-tronic watches. The DOXA SUB, with its 43x45x13 mm case and 17-jewel, self-winding Swiss movement could with stand pressure at 990 feet deep and temperatures 76 degrees below 0. But it could not withstand the crest-ing tide of time technology. It was doomed from the day it debuted. In 1978, Switzerland’s Montres DOXA, reeling from the quartz crisis, was sold. A few years later, production of the orange-faced SUB stopped.

Now, in a surprising twist, fate seems to be smiling on the DOXA SUB, 25 years after its demise. Four years ago, the Jenny family of Bi-enne, Switzerland, which has owned DOXA since 1990, and marketing expert Rick Marei launched a re-edition of the original DOXA SUB sold exclusively on the company website http://www.doxawatches.com/. Since then, the watch has been living the lavida loca: It’s had a starring role in hit Holly-wood movie, will have its story told in a soon-to-be-published book, and is worshipped by arabid fan club at WatchUseek.com and other websites where fellow “doxaholics”share their passion for what they consider ahorological rock star. So strong is the DOXA revival in America that Marei, now DOXA’s European-based managing director, is in the process of establishing a newsubsidiary in the United States, DOXA Watches USA. He plans to shift DOXA’s Internet-only re-tail sales policy to an authorized dealer structurethrough fine watch and jewelry stores. In addi-tion to the orange-faced SUB re-edition, DOXA sells re-editions of other DOXA blasts from the past like the SUB Sharkhunter and SUB T-Graph automatic chronograph as well as the Flieger II (based on a model from 1948) and the Deco (from 1956). For now, the entire DOXA Re-edi-tion Collection is available at the Doxa website, ranging in price from $900 to $3,600.

Click here to read full article >
